NEW REPORT: Payback Time? The Supercommittee & Fossil Fuel Subsidies

Public Campaign, along with Oil Change international, released a new report yesterday: "Payback Time? The Supercommittee & Fossil Fuel Subsidies." The report shows that the 12 members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, or “supercommittee,” have received at least $4.2 million in campaign contributions from dirty energy interests lobbying to keep their wasteful taxpayer subsidies.

Letter to Supercommittee: End Taxpayer Subsidies to Big Oil to Reduce Deficit

Yesterday our friends at Oil Change International, along with 52 other groups, sent a letter to the members of the supercommittee demanding that the elimination of government handouts to the oil, coal and gas industries be a central part of the deficit reduction plan they are to present to the full Congress by November 23rd.

Big Oil + Big Campaign Cash = Big Payday

On top of paying nearly $4 a gallon for gas, we're also padding Big Oil companies' huge profits through tax subsidies. And just yesterday, despite huge public outcry to stop them, the House of Representatives voted to end debate on putting a stop to the corporate welfare. It's pretty easy to see why. As The Hill reports today, Big Oil poured huge amounts of campaign cash into lawmakers' campaign coffers and, SHOCK, they got exactly what they wanted.
