Sen. Pat Toomey Holds Fundraiser Hours After Skipping Hearing on Long-Term Unemployment

On Wednesday, the 19-member Congressional Joint Economic Committee panel met to discuss long-term unemployment. Just four members of the panel decided to show up. As ThinkProgress notes, “perhaps the poor attendance at a hearing dealing with unemployment shouldn’t be a surprise, given the general lack of focus from members of Congress on unemployment since the end of the recession.”

Big Oil front group to supercommittee: "let us do our thing"

The American Petroleum Institute (API), the oil industry’s trade association, held a press call today urging deficit reduction “supercommittee” members to let oil companies “do our thing,” which includes maintaining their wasteful taxpayer subsidies.  

Two lobbyists for API have previously served as aides to members of the supercommittee, according to the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP).

Sen. Toomey will not give up fundraising during supercommittee

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) was asked yesterday if he would join Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) in giving up fundraising for his own campaign while serving on the Joint Committee on Deficit Reduction, or “supercommittee.”

“He currently does not have plans to cease fundraising,” his office responded.
