I am writing to our active members in Louisiana so that you’re the first to know that we’re calling on Rep. William Jefferson, Democrat of Louisiana, to resign from office.
I’m sure you’ve heard the sordid tales: The FBI found $90,000 in his freezer and has a videotape of him taking $100,000 in cash from an informant. The paper (and wiretap) trail linking him and a handful of dirty officials and corrupt businessman is a mile long.
Rep. Jefferson insists he’s staying in office. We think his actions have brought dishonor on the People’s House, and it’s time for him to resign.
If you agree with us, please sign this petition urging him to resign.
If you don’t agree, we’d like to hear from you.
At a moment when Congress is mired in scandal, for Rep. Jefferson to remain in office is both inappropriate and counter-productive to producing a solution to the money in politics corruption that plagues our elected officials. Louisiana – particularly Louisiana during these difficult rebuilding times – deserves better.
Indeed, we are troubled by the actions of the Justice Department in raiding a congressional office. But that does not blind us to Rep. Jefferson’s actions.
We urge you to join us in calling on Rep. Jefferson to resign.
