What Makes a Candidate Competitive?

There has been a lot of national attention given to the Connecticut Senate race between Sen. Joe Lieberman, Democratic challenger Ned Lamont, and Republican challenger Arthur Schlessinger. Ken Dixon at The Connecticut Post, who highlights the signing of the Voters First Pledge by all candidates, examines the extent to which money has determined who can successfully challenge an incumbent.

 

If you have to self-finance your campaign to avoid engendering special-interest conflicts, how can we come to have a legislative body that both puts the needs of voters first, and reflects the larger populace? It's an excellent first step that all these candidates have recognized the problem and taken the pledge - now whoever Connecticut sends to the Senate has a responsibility to turn that pledge into the fix we need.
